I.
Course Description: In this course you will explore the distinguishing contours of the missional church revolution as well as the leadership required to lead it. You will focus on three primary shifts: the shift from an internal to an external ministry focus, the shift from a program-driven to people-driven development agenda, and the shift from church-based leadership to apostolic-era leadership.

General Purpose and Procedure: The agenda for leaders in a missional era is fundamentally different than leadership in the church age. This course explores these differences and helps leaders construct a way forward. This course is a one-week intensive that will meet daily, Monday-Thursday 8:00 am – 5 pm; and Friday 8:00 am – noon.

Learning Outcomes: • • • • Explore and chart the cultural trends in emerging culture the their implications for leadership in the missional church Identify the major characteristics of the missional church movement Understand the requirements for leadership in the missional church, including theological, methodological, and behavioral aspects Develop leadership strategies for missional renewal in the learner’s realm of influence

Pre-Course Required Reading: Learners must complete a minimum of 1200 pages of pre-course reading by choosing from the books listed below. Pre-Course Assignment: 1. Complete a one-page reading report for each book you’ve selected to meet the 1200-page requirement. Reports are due on the first day of the course. Reports should provide the book title and the number of pages read. • Identify the three best, most challenging or most insightful ideas in the book and why. • Address the following: what will be different for you because these ideas have come to you (example: what actions will you take, what attitudes will you change, how will you lead differently, how will your ministry be different?) 2. Prepare a “Leadership Challenge” for use during the course (due the first day of the course). This should include the following components: • Describe your challenge. What situation/opportunity/problem faces you that you need to address? Why is this important? What do you intend to accomplish? What difference will it make? • Describe the results you seek. What do you want to see happen? How will you measure your success? What benchmarks will signal your progress? • Identify your critical questions. What are the issues you are struggling with? Where do you need advice?

Post-Course Assignment: Learners will write a 15-page paper that: • Summarizes key insights of the course material • Presents a theological foundation for missional leadership • Synthesizes the learner’s response to the leadership challenges of the missional church • Projects a 12-month personal and ministry development path to move more missional in leadership • Due on July 22, 2011
VII. Grading: Pre-Course Reading/Reporting: 25% Class participation: 25% Post-Course Paper: 50% Grades for this course will be available December 1 from the Registrar’s office.
VIII. Course Workload: The workload for this course has been distributed according the SSM standard of 135 hours for a three semester hour course.
