Master of Arts (Intercultural Studies)

Description:

The MA (Intercultural Studies) provides you with a focused knowledge of the tools and techniques needed to study cultures other than your own. It prepares you to engage in research and analysis which is informed by those disciplines and contributes to the ministry of those engaged in work among new ethnic and cultural groups.

Programs for Students with or without Previous Bible Training

Each degree program is offered in two formats:

  • Program 1 for college or university graduates with no previous studies in Bible or theology, and
  • Program 2 for Bible college graduates or college graduates who have at least 30 semester hours of Bible, theology or church history.

  • BIB 5133 Acts to Revelation: God's People Proclaiming Redemption Globally
  • BIB 5410 Hermeneutics: Interpreting and Applying the Bible
  • THE 6310 Systematic Theology 1
  • THE 6320 Systematic Theology 2
  • THE 6341 Theological Methods and Issues

Worldview and Spiritual Formation (9 semester hours)

Concentration (21 semester hours)

  • 5 courses from ICS
  • 1 course from among BIB, GRE, HEB, HIS, ICS, or THE
  • RES 7962 Intercultural and Muslim Studies Integrative Seminar

Free Electives (6 semester hours)

  • 2 courses from any alpha-designator

Worldview and Spiritual Formation (6 semester hours)

  • ICS 6024 Understanding Cultures and Worldviews
  • EDM 6170 Community and Church-based Spiritual Formation

Concentration (18 semester hours)

Opportunities: 

You will be able to:

  • Articulate biblical principles and models for participating in the global mission of God;
  • Evaluate historical examples for participating in the global mission of God;
  • Evaluate current strategies regarding the global mission of God;
  • Develop strategies and models for participating in the global mission of God;
  • Demonstrate effectiveness in cross-cultural analysis, research, and writing about the global mission of God.

Potential employment and service opportunities for graduates include:

  • Governmental service: various diplomatic positions in various US embassies overseas.
  • Military service: chaplaincy in the various branches.
  • Church service: mission pastors; ethnic outreach coordinators.
  • Mission service: short-term to long-term missionaries in any cross-cultural service anywhere in the world; mission agency office support person; mission mobilizer.
  • Business service: entry level positions in non-governmental organizations or transnational corporations; tentmakers/business as mission or any other creative access type of platform overseas; marketing specialists to specific groups.
  • Educational service: international TEFL teacher; K-12 TEFL teacher (with ACSI certification); cross-cultural sensitivity consultant in educational environments.
