For all the single people on Valentine's Day

I'll start off by saying this is not a pity or sympathy post - not for myself or for anyone else. This is meant to be encouraging and challenging for people who are single, like myself, on this Valentine's Day.

As Valentine's Day has been approaching rapidly, I have had my moments when I was in a store and was absolutely overwhelmed and slightly disgusted by all of the pink and red through out the store. I will admit, I'm not a huge fan of Valentine's Day. No, it's not because I'm single, it's because I think it's kind of sad that America only focuses on love for ONE day out of the whole year.

I believe that if you love someone, you should be showing it to them every day. You're probably wondering, why did you say "showing", don't you mean "telling"? Nope, I mean showing. I truly believe that actions speak way louder than words, I definitely think it's a very important thing to say "I love you", but your actions need to follow up with those words.

Last night, I saw The Vow (SO GOOD!) and Leo (Channing Tatum's character) had such a fierce and passionate love for Paige (Rachel McAdam's character), it was pretty ridiculous. He definitely verbalized his love for her many times, but he always followed through with action and even though she didn't remember who he was, he still pursued her daily through words followed by actions which was absolutely incredible to me.

So, for all you single people who are dreading Valentine's Day.....don't dread it. Use your singleness as a time to serve others and to draw closer to the Lord. When you are content in God's love for you and in who He created you to be, that's when you are truly able to be the best significant other you can be to whoever you end up dating in the next month or in the next year, only God knows when He will bring along that special person for you.

Also, think about the people who have recently lost their spouses to war, sickness, unknown causes, and many other things. I know that it would make their day, if not year, if someone came and spent time with them tomorrow not because they feel they have to, but because they love that person.

Something I have learned is that when you serve others, your love and desire to know God more grows immensely! It also takes your mind off of yourself and what you don't have and makes you thankful for what you DO have.

Finally, continue to pursue the Lord wholeheartedly. It's amazing how spending time with God every day can totally change your perspective on life and how you show love to others around you. When you are pursuing the Lord, people will notice that. God's love will flow out of you into the lives of others and they will wonder what makes you different, why you have so much joy inside of you.

Don't dread Valentine's Day, embrace it. Use it as a time to serve those around you who need to be shown God's great love for them!

In Christ,
Damaris Bruce
