Don't Try So Hard

I don’t know about you, but most days my life is characterized by trying.  I try to be a great student.  I try to excel at work.  I try to be a faithful friend.  I try to impress people.

This mentality can easily carry over into our relationships with family members, roommates, and even God.

Work is a good thing.  Excellent effort honors Jesus.  But if we work for God without first resting in His finished work for us, we will quickly experience burnout and will exhibit judgmental tendencies toward others.

As Tullian Tchividjian has famously said, “The banner under which Christians live reads, ‘It is finished.’”

Because this is a struggle for so many of us, New Life 91.9 – a radio ministry of CIU located in Charlotte, NC – has started a devotional series titled “Letting Go of Your Try-Hard Life.”  Geared toward a female audience, the series focuses on receiving God’s grace daily.

Above is the first video in the series; the rest of the videos can be found here.  As you watch, take a deep breath – God’s love compels us; His grace will provoke gratitude, naturally overflowing into good works.

It is finished – don’t ever forget that.
