Following an undergraduate degree in Education from Messiah College in Pennsylvania, Rasmussen earned a master’s degree in physical education from Southern Methodist University and a Doctor of Education degree in Sports Management from Temple University. Prior to coming to CIU, he served many roles in intercollegiate athletics, including athletics director for an NCAA III university, as well as college instructor.

For a significant portion of his career, Dr. Rasmussen has been a head soccer coach at the collegiate and professional level, and on the administrative staff of the U.S. Men’s National and U.S. Olympic men’s soccer teams.  He spent a number of years in Major League Soccer working in player development, scouting and event management, and stadium operations. Dr. Rasmussen continues to maintain active relationships and professional ties to the sport of soccer.  He has also served in business development and project facilitation for many non-sports related entities.  Early in his career he led multiple cycling tours and wilderness adventure trips including mountain climbing, canoeing and whitewater rafting.

Dr. Rasmussen lives in Columbia, South Carolina with his wife Debby. They have three adult children. In his personal life, Dr. Rasmussen has enjoyed extensive travel throughout North America, the Caribbean and Europe.
