We are embarking on one of the most exciting chapters in the history of CIU. For the first time in 89 years, CIU will field our first intercollegiate athletic teams in fall 2012. Why athletics at CIU? It fits with our purpose of educating people from a biblical worldview to impact the nations with the message of Christ. Imagine the outreach that student-athletes and coaches can have both at home and abroad using the platform of athletics to share the good news of Jesus Christ
Fall 2012 marks the beginning of an aggressive five-year plan introducing intercollegiate athletics at CIU.

CIU will compete in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA), whose mission is to use athletic competition as an integral component of education, evangelism, and encouragement.
The ram was chosen as the CIU mascot for its strength and its biblical significance. Not only are rams known as ferocious defenders of their territory and their flock, the ram is a symbol of God's provision - a foreshadowing of Christ's sacrifice on the cross.

Cheryl Guinther is the communications coordinator for the Alumni Ministries Office of Columbia International University. She serves alumni with genuine personal care and a professional approach developed over years as an executive administrative assistant and missionary. Cheryl worked over six years for a Christian financial management company providing client-care to seniors. As a missionary with Brethren in Christ World Missions in Zambia, Africa, Cheryl managed a mission guesthouse, served with a church team taking the “Jesus Film” to outlying villages, and started a “Reading Room” ministry to help street children return to school. For the last five years, she has been a mentor in the Missions Development Program for Brethren in Christ World Missions. Cheryl and her husband, Peter, moved to Columbia from Mechanicsburg, Penn. in August of 2010 so that Peter could complete his Master of Divinity degree at CIU. She enjoys reading, gardening, volunteering at a women’s shelter, and the close fellowship with her neighbors in the CIU Village.
Cheryl’s favorite Scripture verse is Romans 13:8.
Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.

Driving south on Interstate 95 from Washington, D.C. in the fall of 1990 to begin a new chapter in life had me scared to death. Giving up a chance to play college basketball to attend Columbia International University was hard. Before I left, there was a man who pulled me aside and said, "Giving up hoops to go to that school is going to be the biggest mistake of your life!" But my favorite teacher, David First, was a graduate of CIU. His passion for God burned like something I had never seen. I wanted that passion, so I decided to follow in his footsteps. It has turned out to be one of the greatest decisions I ever made.
After graduating with two degrees, Bible Teaching and Master of Arts in Teaching, that same "big decision anxiety" that I had six years earlier showed up again. Now what? I feel like God said something very simple, "Help people." So in 1996 I began traveling full time as an inspirational speaker with a goal of helping people. Since then God has opened the doors for me to speak in churches and universities, as well as at music festivals and other special events all over the United States. He has also allowed me to work with the poor in India, Mongolia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Guatemala. His provisions have overwhelmed me. Not only has He allowed me to speak, but also to help people in other ways including a podcast, three published books, and over 40 radio and television interviews. Statisticians calculate that the messages through all these outlets over the past 16 years have been available to over 100 million people. Praise Him!
I could never thank CIU enough for teaching, mentoring, and training me. I am now hoping to have an impact in a new endeavor. God is giving me opportunities to speak in the corporate world. There are certain restrictions on the words I can use, but there is no restriction on Truth. These new messages talk about integrity, character, sacrifice, patience, and humility. I pray that God will use these truths as seeds planted into the hearts of the lost. I know that Jesus said, "I am the Truth," I believe He will work in the lives of the lost, and I will continue to pursue what He told me many years ago - "Help people."
