CIU Campus Expansion Underway
published 2009 Jul 31
Columbia International University is taking the initial steps toward campus expansion to accommodate future growth. New student housing, new athletic facilities and additional academic buildings are planned for the center of the 400-acre campus. Initial grading and infrastructure development costing $2.2 million is underway, most of it being funded by an anonymous donor. The grading will cover approximately 26 acres and is expected to take about five months to complete.
The expansion plans, which have been in development for over two years, are designed to accelerate CIU’s educational purpose: “To educate people from a biblical worldview to impact the nations with the message of Christ.”
Keith Marion, senior vice president for development and operations said the new student housing will focus on married students, as well as graduate students who currently live off campus. “This will provide them the opportunity to be more fully integrated into campus life, and the opportunities for spiritual growth and fellowship afforded to those who live in the residence halls,” Marion said.
The addition of athletic facilities is important as CIU is actively pursuing membership in an intercollegiate sports program. It is also the university’s desire is for the majority of the Undergraduate School students to be active a physical fitness program. “We want our students and graduates to be ‘fit to serve’ emotionally, spiritually and physically,” Marion said.
“By creating this new developable area, the university now has a canvas on which to plan its future facilities,” Marion said.
The expansion of CIU is creating higher visibility for the school in the Columbia area. Read "The Secret is Out" an opinion article by CIU Vice President Mike Blackwell, published in "The State" newspaper: http://www.thestate.com/editorial-columns/story/913830.html
