The Columbia International University Cougars ended an undefeated season with a 2-0 win over the Chivas to take the Central Division, South Carolina Amateur Soccer Association championship trophy Jan. 28. Supported by the largest and most enthusiastic CIU crowd of the year, the Cougars scored two goals late in the second half, and then held the Chivas scoreless. After the game, sophomore forward Sam Avery said that the season was “founded on the unifying factor of glorifying God” and it “ended perfectly with a hard fought and well-deserved win.” Avery noted that “Every guy played selflessly and passionately to finish the season strong.” Amidst the celebration, the Cougars pulled away to midfield, closing the season in prayer along with CIU President Bill Jones, Dean of Students Rick Swift, and Athletic Director Dan Vance.
CIU senior Emma Rea said it was the most intense game of the season. “It is such an encouragement to see the team strive for victory and then be so quick to give God the glory,” Rea said.
