A Columbia International University alumnus has been recognized by the FBI for ministering to the needs of police, firefighters and other public safety workers.

Robert Michaels, a 1981 CIU graduate, is the founder of Serve & Protect, an international non-profit organization based in Brentwood, Tennessee. He received the FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award for the Memphis division. The award recognizes Michaels for assisting public safety workers who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related needs.

Since launching in July 2011, Serve & Protect has helped more than 3,000 public safety professionals with PTSD or suicidal ideations locate proper mental health resources. Education is also a large part of Michael’s work, providing seminars to law enforcement and emergency services, through articles on the Serve & Protect website, free mobile app, and Facebook Page.
