CIU Names New Library Director

Stephanie Solomon, CIU Library Director

Stephanie Solomon decided to become a librarian – while using the library to decide what to become. Solomon, who has been named the new library director at Columbia International University’s G. Allen Fleece Library, was doing research on careers in a public library when she discovered she enjoyed research and that the work of a librarian fit her personality.

Solomon grew up in New Haven, Conn., but her family roots can be traced back to Columbia, S.C. in the 1800s. After earning at Bachelor’s degree in English from Spelman College, and a master’s degree from the University of South Carolina, Solomon served as a reference librarian at Midlands Technical College in Columbia. She joined CIU in May 2005 where she gained experience in a variety of positions at the library. Solomon says she “enjoys her job immensely.”

Solomon’s passions are “learning as much as possible about various subjects and studying the Word of God.” She is also passionate about sharing what she has learned.

Considering that there is so much information available to people today, especially via the Internet, she says an important aspect of her job is “to ensure that people are able to use information with discernment.” She points to Proverbs 9:10 as her guide:

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Solomon is a member of the South Carolina Library Association, the Association of Christian Librarians, and the American Theological Library Association. She replaces Jo Ann Rhodes who retired at the end of last year.
