A CIU “vision for education” reaches to Alaska

Dr. Michael Johnson

CIU alumnus and Alaska Commissioner of Education Dr. Michael Johnson

Dr. Michael Johnson once wrote that Columbia International University “provided a vision of education that has shaped even the smallest details of my experience.”

Johnson’s vision of education will continue on at the highest level in Alaska. That state’s incoming new governor Mike Dunleavy likes what he sees in Johnson and will retain him as Alaska’s education commissioner, a position Johnson has held since 2016.

“I look forward to working with the State Board of Education, Governor Dunleavy, and all Alaskans to make sure every student is prepared for success in higher education, job training, or vocational education," Johnson said in a statement. "I value and appreciate the confidence that Governor-elect Dunleavy has placed in me to serve Alaska’s students and their families.”

Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree from CIU in 1994, and a Master of Arts in Teaching from CIU in 1997. Early in his college career he was studying for the ministry, but was also interested in education. That’s when he received counsel from the late CIU Professor Cliff Bedell.

“In his wisdom, Professor Cliff Bedell assured me that serving as an educator was entirely in keeping with God’s call to serve Him in ministry,” Johnson said. “Over a meal in the cafeteria, Professor Bedell graciously encouraged me to pray and follow God’s leading.”

Before becoming education commissioner, Johnson worked in Alaska as a principal, district superintendent, elementary teacher, and special education program assistant.
