Dominican Republic National Team Standout Commits to CIU Men’s Basketball
The Columbia International University Men's Basketball Program has received a huge boost with a commitment from West Coast Elite (WCE) 100 camp invitee Julio Rodriguez. The Dominican Republic native is a top 2020 prospect who had received offers from NCAA Division I programs, including the University of San Diego and Liberty University. Rodriguez was a standout at the WCE Elite 100 camp earlier this summer. The elite invitation-only camp invites the best talent in the country and has seen the likes of NBA players Josh Jackson (Phoenix Suns), Frank Jackson (New Orleans Pelicans), and Lonzo Ball (New Orleans Pelicans) as campers.
A highlight of Rodriguez’ high school career was playing with the Dominican Republic U16 National team, competing at the 2017 FIBA Americas Championship. He averaged 9.4 points per game in international competition, scoring in double figures three times.
During his senior year, Rodriguez, a 6’1 guard, played against nationally-ranked competition at prep school Veritas Training Academy in Santa Fe Springs, California.
CIU Men’s Basketball Coach Tony Stockman says Rodriguez is a great addition to the 2020 recruiting class for his talent and character.
"We are very excited to add a player like Julio to our basketball team, but more excited to add the type of person he is to our campus,” Stockman said. “He is a speedy guard who can shoot it and is a fierce defender. He competes at a high level and plays with intensity.”
As for Rodriguez, he says he is especially looking forward to the Christian environment at CIU and wants to play hard.
"I am just looking for an opportunity to prove myself on the court and I am excited to come to CIU because I have family that lives nearby who will push me to be successful in college.”
Rodriguez will join an already talented CIU men's basketball program who proved to be one of the best teams in the Appalachian Athletic Conference last year.
