Impressive Times Recorded at CIU Discover Run

CIU cross country recruit Garrett Searcy crossing the finish line of the 5k.

The wooded hills of Columbia International University make for a demanding run. But dozens of athletes from around South Carolina were up to the challenge on a cold Ground Hog’s Day 2013, as they took part in CIU’s Second Annual Discover Run that included a 5k and 10k race.

CIU men’s cross country recruit Garrett Searcy ran away with the 5k race, winning by almost two minutes with a time of 20:32. For Gary McAlister of Rock Hill, S.C. it was almost like the movie “Ground Hog Day.” McAlister was first across the finish line this year, just like last year – but in a different race. McAlister, the winner of last year’s 5k, this time won the 10k with a time of 43:14.

On the women's side Irmo High School senior Janay Chisolm took the 5k with a time of 23:45. CIU cross county recruit Alexis Zwilling came in second with a time of 24:58. The women's 10k was won by Colleen Vowles of Columbia with a time of 52:07.
