Krispy Kreme CEO Brings Challenge, Doughnuts to CIU

Krispy Kreme CEO Jim Morgan.

Not every Columbia International University Chapel begins with 60 dozen doughnuts.  But the Chapel speaker on March 1 brought his work with him.  Students lined up to get a doughnut before heading in to Shortess Chapel to hear Krispy Kreme CEO Jim Morgan challenge them to pursue their passion in life.

“I’ve seen too many people in life either pursue someone else’s dream, or someone else’s dream for them,” Morgan said.  “From the day I got out of college … I have been able and given the ability to do something I could do with passion."

Morgan has more than 35 years of business experience.  He was named chairman and CEO of Krispy Kreme in 2008 after serving on the company’s board since 2000.  Morgan has also served as chairman and CEO of Wachovia Securities and chairman and CEO of the securities firm Interstate/Johnson Lane, Inc.  Before going into business, Morgan was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy.

“I urge you to be sure to pursue your passion and your dreams and take your gifts out to (God’s) service – as opposed to doing what you think someone else thinks you should do,” Morgan said.

Morgan also addressed over 100 business leaders and professionals gathered for CIU’s Ministry in the Marketplace Luncheon series.  He told them he is passionate about expressing his faith in the workplace because, “our businesses and our cities are at risk.”

Krispy Kreme’s mission statement is: “To touch and enhance lives through the joy that is Krispy Kreme.”  Morgan adds that for those who are Christians at his workplace it’s “the joy that is Jesus Christ.”
