The Library Books are Coming Home

July 19, 2011

The first semi truck load of books returned home on July 19 to the G. Allen Fleece Library at Columbia International University, from their temporary housing in Atlanta.  The books were cleaned and restored in Georgia following a May 2010 fire at the library.

As the books are unloaded off the truck, they are unpacked in a temporary tent outside the library, put on book carts, and wheeled into the library where they are being processed before they are put on the shelf.

The William B. Meyer Company of Massachusetts has hired temporary workers, including CIU students to do much of the work.  CIU Library Director Jo Ann Rhodes is asking for prayer for the workers, especially for those who are working in the temporary tent as temperatures in Columbia are around 100 degrees.

The pallets of boxes will be unloaded every other day off the semis.  There are 20 books to a box, with about 6,000 boxes to be unloaded and unpacked.

Rhodes expects the process to take about four weeks.  She says because renovation of the library entrance continues, the library will likely open to students in September, a few weeks after fall classes begin.
