Rams Facts

Sound the Shofar! Here Come the Rams!

In June 2010, CIU hired Kim Abbott as its first athletic director. She formerly served as the athletic director at the University of South Carolina-Beaufort where she built that school’s athletic program from the ground up. Kim’s plan for CIU athletics includes eight teams phased in over a five-year period beginning in the fall 2012 semester.

Athletic Facilities

  • The Moore Fitness Center was completed in 2008, and boasts a collegiate-length basketball court that is adaptable for collegiate volleyball and a bleacher capacity of 420. The Center includes four locker rooms, two weight rooms, a fitness/aerobic room, and a lobby with a concession stand, fireplace and flat screen television. It is named after Mr. and Mrs. Sam Z. Moore.
  • Land has been cleared for intercollegiate baseball, softball and soccer fields; including a central press box, concessions stand, restrooms and scoreboards.
  • The current CIU soccer field will continue to be used for student recreation and intercollegiate soccer practice.

CIU will play in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA), whose mission is to use athletic competition as an integral component of education, evangelism and encouragement.

Mascot

The Ram was chosen as the CIU mascot for its strength and for its biblical significance. Not only are they known as ferocious defenders of their territory and their flock, the ram is a symbol of God’s provision — a foreshadowing of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross.

The ram's horn, the shofar, is used to proclaim important events. So sound the shofar — join the team!
