Completion Requirements

Successful completion of Research Methods and Dissertation Proposal Seminars.

Successful oral defense before a defense committee of CIU Intercultural Studies faculty.

Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale), with no grade below “B-” applicable to the degree.

(Transfer grades are not calculated in the cumulative GPA.)

Program Design

The Ph.D. in Intercultural Studies consists of 48 semester hours of study and it may be completed in three years of full-time

study or five years of part-time study.

Accelerated Three Year Program Schedule

Research Methods (ICS 9600) and Dissertation Proposal (ICS 9900) are delivered in an online seminar with a cohort of

students. Following successful completion of ICS 9900, the student will be assigned to a qualified faculty mentor who will

oversee the student through four semesters of Dissertation Research and Development (ICS 9901-04). In the fourth

semester, if the faculty mentor deems that that the dissertation is acceptable, a committee of the faculty mentor and two

other faculty members will convene to read the dissertation and the student is registered for Dissertation Defense (ICS

9905), which culminates in an oral defense of the student’s research.
