POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE
IN ADVANCED BIBLICAL & THEOLOGICAL STUDIES
Purpose and Objectives:
The Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Biblical & Theological Studies provides students with the opportunity to gain
specialized knowledge and skills in preparation for academic or expositional ministry.
The objectives of the Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Biblical & Theological Studies will enable students to:
Analyze the historical-cultural and theological background of various biblical concepts/passages to determine their
influence on the Scriptural author’s intended meaning.
Synthesize the exegetical details from both biblical languages (textual, grammatical-syntactical, historical-cultural,
and literary analysis) into the main exegetical, theological, and homiletical ideas in a biblical text.
Articulate the theological themes developed in the Old or New Testament, including the unity of Scripture’s
metanarrative as well as each writer’s distinct contribution to the overall message.
Conduct quality, in-depth academic research, using solid tools and techniques, on a broader topic in biblical or
theological studies OR Design and deliver high impact sermons that demonstrate a commitment to biblical authority,
sound exegesis, clear organization, persuasive relevance, effective communication, reliance on the Holy Spirit.
Admission Requirements:
In addition to those requirements listed in the Admissions section of this catalog, applicants for the Postgraduate Certificate
in Advanced Biblical & Theological Studies meet the following requirements:
Completion of a graduate-level theological degree (M.A. or M.Div.) from an accredited institution.
A minimum graduate-level GPA of 3.0. Students whose GPA falls between 2.8 and 3.0 may be considered for
admission on a probationary basis, if they submit a request in writing accompanied by appropriate rationale.
Demonstrated proficiency in one of the biblical languages (Greek or Hebrew), either by previous coursework (4
semesters) or proficiency exam.
Demonstrated proficiency in the use of spoken and written English.
Note: Current CBS students who have completed at least one-half of their master’s degree may apply by filling out the “Add
a Program” section on the “Graduate-Level Record Change” form prior to graduation in order to be considered for admission.
Time Limit
Students must complete all requirements within three years, beginning from the date of their first enrollment in a course
following acceptance into the certificate.
Completion Requirements:
Completion of the 18 hours specified in the course of study (see below) with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and
no grade lower than a “C.” Students who aspire to doctoral study should aim for a higher minimum GPA.
Significant achievement of program objectives.
Affirmation of the Doctrinal Statement.
Completion of one semester of chapel participation (CHL 5001).
Note for students pursuing a degree and certificate concurrently: Courses within this certificate may not be applied to meet
degree requirements, nor may courses used to meet degree requirements be applied to meet certificate requirements. The
total required hours for both the degree and the certificate must be met independently.
