Assistant Director, Prison Initiative

The person in this position provides administrative leadership to the CIU Prison Initiative, coordinating and managing the daily operation of the program and fostering alumni relations. Because this person will be assisting periodically in the men’s prison, preference will be toward a male candidate.


• Provide a consistent presence at Kirkland to maintain quality working relationships and ensure program is running successfully.
• Work with the director to establish, assess and meet long-term ministry goals..
• Manage all purchases, reimbursements, and credit card reports.
• Manage the SCDC orientation process for all new staff, faculty, and volunteers.
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, wardens, associate wardens, chaplains, and SCDC headquarter personnel.
• Coordinate, plan, prepare, and execute all details of annual graduation ceremony and corresponding events.
• Coordinate, plan, prepare, and execute all details of application and interview process for incoming cohorts
• Coordinate, plan, prepare, and execute all details of annual alumni reunion.
• Coordinate, plan, prepare, and execute alumni events to provide encouragement, support, and additional training for graduates in the field.
• Coordinate, plan, prepare, and execute new student orientation.
• Work with director to plan details of curriculum and scheduling each semester.
• Accompany director on visits to alumni in the field to provide encouragement and assess needs.
• Provide counsel and support for students and alumni –distributing resources, as needed.
• Work with Director and CIU Development Office in creating strategies to communicate and engage with donors through media, newsletters, and events.
• Manage social media presence for department.
• Work with director to represent the CIU Prison Initiate to churches, private donors, SCDC, and the public, as needed.
• Work with director to meet annual recruiting goals.
• Coordinate production and distribution of annual alumni update.


  • Perform effectively in an environment with frequent changes and competing demands.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, students, inmates, prison officials, and the public.
  • Ability to complete heavy workload within established time frames.
  • Strong working knowledge of the South Carolina prison system.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong administrative skills.
  • Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, Publisher).
  • Working knowledge of social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter).
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Two years of related preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of Prison Initiative Program with good perception of challenges, strengths, and available resources.
