The Controller provides overall leadership for the Accounting department’s operations; exercises responsibility for the accuracy of financial data and reports; and promotes the safeguarding of the university’s assets through the maintenance of adequate internal controls.
- Lead the Accounting department by planning, assigning, and directing their work; investing in their professional development; and coordinating the continual improvement of their practices.
- Oversee internal and external financial reporting (GAAP financial statements; Form 990; management “dashboard” reporting; and ad hoc reports as needed to appraise and show operating results), as well as budget development and reporting.
- Ensure the maintenance of sufficient back-up documentation (i.e., schedules and analyses that support and clarify the amounts reported in financial statements for fixed assets, pledges, investments and trust assets, debt, trust and annuity liabilities, endowment funds, etc.).
- Maintain reconciliations of financial reports produced by other departments (e.g., Advancement, Financial Aid, Ben Lippen, Pine View,) to those of the Accounting dept.
- Ensure that adequate controls and procedures are in place (and documented) to safeguard assets and produce reliable financial information.
- Stay abreast of relevant professional and tax standards so as to keep CIU in compliance with applicable regulations.
- Lead the annual external financial audit preparation process.
- Prepare 990 tax report for auditing agency.
- Monitor the university’s cash position, and initiate actions needed to meet the organization’s needs and maximize resources.
- Create monthly, quarterly, and yearly financial reports for upper management.
- Lead the budgeting process including the management of the budget module, training budget preparers, and working with budget officers to ensure accuracy.
- Monitor and report quarterly investment activity within the endowment and other investments.
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to CIU’s biblical and community life and doctrinal standards, mission and goals.
- Proven supervisory skills.
- Strong working knowledge of US GAAP and best-practices accounting procedures; proven financial reporting experience.
- Strong abilities in: analysis, clear presentation of financial data, communication, and precision.
- Proficiency in the use of accounting software, relational database programming, and Microsoft Office (particularly Excel).
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.
- Five years of experience in accounting and financial reporting, experience in higher education environment preferred.
