The CIU RN-BSN nursing program is ready for you!

October 11, 2021

A faith-integrated nursing program that offers registered nurses the opportunity to advance their careers with an online Bachelor of Science degree, is being offered by Columbia International University beginning in January.

CIU’s RN-BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) program is unique from many other programs, offering a missions-focused Capstone clinical project in the nurse’s own community, international missions opportunities, and the mentoring of undergraduate nursing students.

Organizations supporting the BSN degree for entry to practice nursing include the Institute of Medicine (IOM), the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), and all branches of the military.

Initiating and leading CIU’s nursing program is Dr. Jill McElheny, a nurse with 27 years of diverse health care experience. McElheny comes to CIU from Colorado Christian University where under her guidance, enrollment in the nursing program doubled.

A native of South Carolina’s Lowcountry, McElheny first felt the tug toward Christian nursing as a child, a commitment that has led her to challenging opportunities around the world including service with the Samaritan’s Purse medical disaster team. At CIU, she is looking for students who see nursing as more than a job.

“I’m looking for motivated students who are called to the profession of nursing, and those who wish to advance their careers, becoming Christian leaders in the nursing profession,” McElheny said.

The structure of the RN-BSN program is designed for 15 months, one class at a time, every five  weeks. It is cohort-based, so the students advance through the program with a group of nurses who support each other and encourage one another with the ultimate goal.

“We teach students in a Christian nursing program that every single patient is on holy ground,” McElheny said. “And when you walk into the patient’s room, your mindset should be that you are approaching that patient with compassion. That’s what we’re going to teach them here.”
