Christian singer/songwriter Laura Story, a 2003 graduate of Columbia International University, was awarded the university's first-ever Recent Alumni Recognition Award on April 25. Story was presented the honor during her participation in "Xpress Faith," a three-night outreach event at Spring Valley Baptist Church in Columbia. As the 2009 recipient of a Dove Award for Best Inspirational Album, Story is familiar with winning awards. This recognition, however, is not based on her contribution to the Christian music industry, but is based on her ministry as one who has been called to know Him in order to effectively make Him known.

Two years ago, CIU's Office of Alumni Ministries realized the need to recognize young alumni for their service to the Lord. This idea developed into the formation of the Recent Alumni Recognition Award, based on 1 Timothy 4:12 "Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe."

CIU President Dr. Bill Jones and Dr. Roy King, director of Alumni Ministries, made the presentation of the award after Story finished singing her popular worship song "Indescribable." King said during the presentation, "Laura, we are honoring you tonight to represent the ministry of many of our alumni." Jones, who has known Story since 1996, added, "We're proud of you; CIU loves you; and the body of Christ is grateful for you and your ministry."
