CNS 5001
Clinical Counseling Orientation ................................(0)
This course must be taken each semester a stu-
dent is enrolled in the M.A. in Counseling pro-
gram. The initial orientation is scheduled during
the first days of Fall and Spring semesters.
Subsequent orientation course content will be
provided online. Students are required to visit the
online course webpage at least once a week.
Students must also record their CIU chapel atten-
dance on the course webpage. Various brief
meetings may be scheduled during the student’s
course of study. This course introduces new stu-
dents to the knowledge, skills, and characteristics
related to being successful in the
program. Students gain an understanding of the
conceptual framework that guides the program
and review important elements of the M.A. in
Counseling program handbook, including South
Carolina state professional licensure require-
ments. Opportunity is given for students to ask
questions and meet the program faculty/staff.

Multicultural Counseling ..........................................(3)
This course is an application of counseling and
marriage and family therapy skills in multicultural
and intercultural settings. Multicultural counseling
and cultural diversity issues with focus on mar-
riage and family therapy are addressed. Human
needs in the world community are examined in
order to understand how messages relate to indi-
viduals and families with dramatically different cir-
cumstances. The person and role of multicultural
counselors is evaluated in light of their theology,
personal adaptation, communication, and coun-
seling skills. The professional roles of multicultural
counselor as pastor, missionary, business person,
professional counselor, and marriage and family
therapist are addressed. This course presuppos-
es the validity and necessity of involvement in a
multicultural job or ministry, whether within the
United States or in another country.

Applied Biblical Foundations of Counseling ............(3)
This course is designed to provide a general ori-
entation to the biblical texts and to the various
skills and disciplines needed to read, interpret,
apply, and communicate the text to life and pro-
fessional work. The focus of the course is on how
to bring key biblical stories into the context of
personal stories in counseling and how to think
theologically about counseling based on the bibli-
cal texts, Christian traditions, and one’s cultural
setting.

Foundations of Clinical Mental Health Counseling ..(3)
This course is designed to provide an introduc-
tion to the history, philosophy, roles, and func-
tions of mental health counseling within the
context of other mental health professionals,
mental health services, systems and programs.
This includes the principles of mental health for
prevention, intervention, consultation, education,
and advocacy in a multicultural society. A key
focus of the course is how the biblical texts and
Christian traditions of soul healing provide per-
spectives on human nature, suffering and
redemption to develop a model of clinical mental
health counseling consistent with students’ own
biblical worldview.

Counseling Theory ....................................................(3)
This course provides a broad, foundational
overview and critique of personality and counsel-
ing theories. Emphasis is on the application of
these theories by exploring the techniques and
strategies of each theory, including systems theo-
ry. The philosophical presuppositions, theological
implications, situational appropriateness and
effectiveness with client populations are
addressed. Students are encouraged to begin the
process of synthesizing various approaches into
their personal paradigm of counseling.

Personal & Spiritual Development ............................(3)
This course facilitates students’ maturation and
character formation, with the aim of furthering
their professional impact. Personal and spiritual
mechanisms of change that promote a whole and
