Science majors from S.C. who receive Palmetto Fellows or LIFE Scholarships may be eligible for $2,500 Scholarship Enhancement

South Carolina students enrolling in Columbia International University’s new science programs who receive the LIFE or Palmetto Fellows Scholarship are now eligible for the state’s math and science scholarship enhancements.

CIU’s science programs include Bachelor of Science in Biology, Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences, and Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Life Scholarship students receive up to $5,000 each academic year. Science majors at CIU may qualify for an additional $2,500 in Enhancement funds each academic year starting their sophomore year. With the Enhancement funds, eligible recipients would receive $7,500 ($5,000 LIFE Scholarship award combined with $2,500 additional Enhancement funds) per year.

Palmetto Fellows receive up to $6,700 their first/freshman year, and assuming continued eligibility, sophomores, juniors and seniors receive up to $7,500 per year. Science majors at CIU may qualify for an additional $2,500 in Enhancement funds each academic year starting their sophomore year. With the Enhancement funds, eligible recipients would receive $10,000 ($7,500 Palmetto Fellows Scholarship award combined with additional $2,500 Enhancement funds) per year.

The Palmetto Fellows/LIFE Scholarship recipients in the 2023-2024 freshman class will become eligible to receive the scholarship enhancement as sophomores in 2024-2025.

Dean of CIU Science programs, Dr. David DeWitt, says the scholarships are a welcome financial plus for future CIU science majors.

“I am honored that the state of South Carolina approved our Biology, Biomedical Sciences and Nursing programs for scholarship enhancement awards,” DeWitt said. “ I hope this will help CIU to recruit outstanding students for our academically rigorous programs.”

Qualifying high school criteria for the Palmetto Fellows and LIFE Scholarships is found at  the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education website che.sc.gov.
