2012-2013 Undergraduate Programs

119

tion to these requirements may be granted by the

undergraduate faculty if they deem appropriate.

Academic Provision, Probation, and

Suspension

Entering students who evidence deficiency in aca-

demic qualifications may be admitted on a provi-

sional basis. Normally, such students are

restricted to a maximum of 13 semester hours of

coursework and should achieve a grade point

average of at least 2.00 by the end of their sec-

ond semester in residence at CIU to continue in

school. Students accepted on academic provision

are also normally required to take SOC 0100

College Study Skills. Provisionally admitted stu-

dents may also be required to take ENG 1000

Basic Writing Skills, depending on their test

scores on the COMPASS writing test adminis-

tered during New Student Orientation and/or their

SAT or ACT scores in English.

Continuing students are placed on academic pro-

bation at the end of any semester in which they

earn a grade point average below 2.00 during that

semester. If a student is on academic probation,

absences from classes are not permitted except

for illness or an emergency. A student on aca-

demic probation may be required to (1) carry a

reduced courseload, (2) reduce or eliminate

employment, (3) reduce extracurricular activities

and/or (4) carry out other measures recommend-

ed by the academic advisor or administration to

help the student improve scholastic standing.

Other measures may include referral to the

Academic Success Center for tutoring and/or

testing. In many instances, students on academic

probation will require additional semesters to

complete their studies. Academic probation is

removed when a student accumulates a satisfac-

tory cumulative grade point average of 2.00 or

higher.

Students on academic probation will be notified

and placed on “watch” immediately after the

semester when the grade point average fails to

meet the institutional standard. After two consec-

utive semesters on probation, the student will

receive a written “warning” from the academic

dean indicating that failure to demonstrate sub-

stantive change in status will result in academic

dismissal. Substantive change means immediate

improvement above a 2.00 GPA for the next

semester and continued efforts to retake failed

courses in order to remove probation status.

Students, who at the end of any three consecu-

tive semesters have not removed themselves from

academic probation and/or demonstrate substan-

tive change in their current semester will be dis-

missed from the college.

Academic Dean’s List

Any full-time student (12 credits or more) who

completes a semester of study with a minimum of

a 3.50 grade point average during a semester will

be identified and honored as a student on the

Academic Dean’s List. Any student who com-

pletes a degree program maintaining a cumulative

grade point average of 3.5 or higher will qualify for

graduating with scholastic honors.

Readmission

Students suspended for academic reasons may

apply for readmission through the Undergraduate

Admissions Office after an absence of one year.

At this time of readmission, the academic dean

evaluates the causes for the dismissal and any

evidence that the student may now be able to

make satisfactory academic progress. Students

deemed capable of making and maintaining satis-

factory progress may be readmitted on academic

probation. In certain cases approved by the dean,

students may be allowed to take summer studies

coursework in an attempt to improve their grade

point average.

Withdrawal From the College
