specific Bible/theology courses (see

Prerequisite Policy). It is recommended, but

not required, that these courses be taken

before admission to the College of

Education, but they must be completed

prior to application for graduation.

4. A limited number of students without one of

these experiences, who otherwise meet the

requirements and who display exceptional lead-

ership qualities, may be accepted on the basis

of specific coursework and leadership recom-

mendations.

a. While expertise in all disciplines is not

expected, a student must demonstrate

reasonable competency in content areas by

completing at least 36 semester hours in

undergraduate liberal arts in at least four of

the following core areas:

• Language Arts

• Social Science

• Natural Science

• Math

• Technology

• Fine Arts

b. A student may present evidence of leader-

ship experience with a letter of recommen-

dation from an appropriate professional

within the educational field (e.g., school

board member hiring the student, headmas-

ter recommendation for staff development).

This information should be included in the

references completed as part of the applica-

tion packet.

Note:

Students not meeting all undergraduate

course requirements may complete the courses

through CIU Undergraduate Programs.

College of Education Specific Requirements:

Education Specialist

A graduate faculty admissions panel reviews

applicants and recommends acceptance accord-

ing to their satisfaction of the following criteria:

• Master’s degree is from an accredited institution

(or an institution which meets the academic

standards of CIU) and provides a relevant foun-

dation for postgraduate studies in educational

leadership. (An education or education-related

field is the strongly preferred, but not required,

focus of the master’s degree.)

• Applicant’s performance in graduate course-

work indicates a strong ability to be successful

in postgraduate studies.

• Applicant speaks and writes the English lan-

guage effectively as evidenced in a writing sam-

ple that demonstrates abilities to do doctoral

research and writing.

• Applicant’s Christian maturity is appropriate for

leadership.

• Administrative (K-12, higher education) experi-

ence and other evidence indicate the Ed.S.

degree will enable the applicant to enhance the

student’s leadership role and contribution to the

cause of Christian education.

• Graduate Record Examination (GRE) results

(desired minimum of 50th percentile on Verbal

and on Analytical) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT)

score (desired minimum of 50th percentile) indi-

cate applicant is capable of quality performance

in graduate studies. The exam must have been

taken within the last five years.

When the number of qualified applicants exceeds

the cohort enrollment limit, the most qualified

applicants will be considered for admission.
