Last Words

John Newton, an Anglican minister during the 1700s, is best known for writing hymns, the most famous of which is “Amazing Grace.”

After a long life of serving the Lord in public ministry, through music, and advocating the release of slaves, Newton passed away in 1807.

Near the end of his life, Newton, the self-proclaimed wretch saved by God’s amazing grace, is quoted as saying, “My memory is nearly gone, but I remember two things – that I am a great sinner and that Christ is a great Savior.”

Until the end of his life, Newton marveled at the grace of God – the grace that eventually led him home.  I pray that I, too, would be filled with awe when I consider it.
